If you haven't checked it out yet I am in the newest issue of Somerset Studio (January/February)! The amazing Seth Apter and I worked on a collaborative journal project that took us 3 years to complete. There is a very nice article (8? pages) in the magazine and lots of beautiful photos of our journals not to mention our names on the cover! Yay!

Thanksgiving!

Hi Guys,

I hope you all had a beautiful thanksgiving. Jared and I visited my Mom and though we were only 3 people we still managed to have quite a feast! It was also super special because we had a "healthy" thanksgiving this year using very little butter and oil. Roasted root vegetables, couscous, turkey, and homemade cranberry sauce to name a few... It was excellent!

My mom always sets such a beautiful table.

On another note, I'm still working working working- Painting almost everyday. Last I counted, I have 37 brand new paintings in the secret new style/theme I have been working on. We are planning it's full release probably in January or February. It's going to be a lot of fun. Jared is also working hard at the redesign of my website to coincide with the new direction I've been going. We will be having lots of giveaways and other fun stuff when they are finally released too. I was toying with the idea of doing 30 paintings in 30 days but since I have now made more than 30, I'll have to see. hehe Perhaps I will release a few new paintings everyday for a month? YAY! This is really the most prolific and inspired I have been in my career so far and it definitely will be a milestone for me. I can't wait to share it with you all! XOX

Textural Bliss Workshop: A Fun Day in Sanford, FL

What an amazing day!! The Textural Bliss Workshop was a huge success! Many thanks to Jeanine and Mary from Jeanine Taylor Folk Art in Sanford, FL for hosting the workshop. And thank you to all the girls who attended, we all had such a great time!

Isn't the front wall neat? It's a wonderful mosaic artwork of found objects.

Everyone wore name tags with their first name and favorite color :) It made for some interesting Artist-Names :)

I brought a giant mess of colors and mediums for everyone to try.

A good shot of the ephemera I brought for everyone to play with: including some great vintage fabrics and papers.

The demos were really fun, and everyone had great questions.

Here's the room we worked in, all the spooky decorations are still up from their recent Spirits in Sanford Halloween show. It was really fun to make art while surrounded by other artwork :)

I really enjoyed helping everyone, and seeing the directions people took with their work. Everyone made such beautiful pieces!

And everyone got delightfully messy!

Look at everyone and their work! What a great group. I am so proud of all of you, and you should all be proud too. Thank you all for coming!

A New Direction

I've been creating like crazy lately. I must have finished 14 larger paintings since July which is a TON for me. I have been going a very different direction with my paintings. Some on canvas... some on wood when I ran out of canvas. They are creepy, colorful, fantasy, and maybe even a little dark. I am in a new world and I am in heaven. I'm trying to keep up with the photos and will hopefully have lots of eye candy for you soon but here are a few teaser detail shots to wet your appetite. Hope you all like this new direction I'm going with my work. It's really, really exciting for me! :)

I will be teaching a full day of "Textural Bliss" Acrylic still life class. ($85 per person, $10 materials fee)

"In this class participants will be making happy still life paintings with lots of yummy texture! You will learn the basics of collage and drawing with an in-depth focus on textures and acrylic mediums. We will play with crackle, sand, pumice, fabrics, paper and lots more! I will show you how to “cheat” if your drawing skills aren’t so sharp so you can dive into the fun part- painting! You will gain knowledge of my techniques and will be able to take these skills and apply them to any future creative endeavors. This class is for all levels. Beginners welcome!

Feeling Guilty About Not Blogging

I've been feeling guilty about not blogging so much lately. About not having new inspiring photos to share...feeling guilty about blogging in bursts rather than being consistent like I feel I should. I look at some folks blogs like Alisa Burke who I admire, and she's always got some cute project idea or beautiful recipe to share. Her photos look like magazine ads. I don't know how she, and many others like her do it.

I know that the more time I spend online updating my website, store and blog the better I will do in the long run but it's so hard. All I wanta do is make art. Sitting alone with my music, painty fingers, instead of the click of the keyboard.

I actually saw that the cherries I bought the other day have a Facebook and Twitter account. WHAT!? I really wonder what our life is going to be like 10 years from now. Maybe I should feel guilty about not keeping up with the rest of the world. Maybe every moment should be tweeted, documented. Maybe that's just how things are now. Maybe I am getting old. ha

Summer Heat. Ugg.

Hey guys,

I've been hiding from the heat working inside and feeling lazy. Summer always seems to do that too me. It's so humid here in Florida. Ugg. I haven't had a chance to journal in about a month. WHAT!?? Crazy right? Instead I've been working on paintings. I'm excited about teaching a few classes in Sandford FL this fall and am hard at work on my demo pieces and writing the classes. I am also excited because my good friend Tessa McSorley (http://www.howtomakeart.com/) and I have been working on a new online journaling class. It's going to be awesome. We will be binding our own journals, playing with plaster and lots more! It's still in the early stages so I'm not sure when it will be out but I'm so excited to be working on it with her. :)

Fun with Kuretake pens!

I was recently sent a bunch of fun pens by Kuretake, well-known for their awesome Zig pens. I had an afternoon to play and wanted to show you all my results! :)

Here are a few of my favorites of the lot:

The waterbrush. I take this with me everywhere! It has a reservoir you can fill with water and combined with watercolor media is perfect for journaling on the go.

A fabulous double sided metallic Painty marker. One side is silver and the other is gold. A great fine tip too!

Love the Woodcraft markers! A chunky tip with a nice opaque, slightly chalky paint that is easy to write over. Great for journaling!

This Real brush pen is fabulous! It leaves great brush strokes and is watersoluable for watercolor effects. LOVE.

The Scroll and Brush marker. I'm loving the double tip side.

The Painty FX! A great all around paint pen. Not quite as nice a tip as the Sharpie Poster paints for fine work but still a great pen to add to your arsenal. Slightly chalky and writes over well when dry.

Here are a few shots of my journal playing with these pens. The background is acrylic paint and all of the pen work is the Kuretake pens.

Here I tried to do a complete page with only the pens. The background was done mostly with the Woodcraft markers and made for a nice background. The other pens wrote and stamped nicely over top.

A Tweet a Day is retiring.

As most of you know, over the past year I have been doing "a tweet a day" Soul Journaling prompt via Twitter. I have so loved seeing your pages inspired by these tweets and hearing how you have enjoyed them. Lately it has been harder for me to keep up, and as we have more than 365 days of journaling ideas, I think it's time to finally retire the daily tweets. My Soul Journaling Yahoo Group moderator Toni and I have been working on archiving all of the past year's prompts and are posting them in the "files" section of our group. I Need Some Craft Show Advice

Hey guys,

I need some advice from those of you out there who do craft shows... What's the easiest and cheapest way to take credit cards? The last few shows I've done I only took cash and check but I'm ready now to upgrade. The only thing I am worried about are the fee's. I only plan on doing one or two shows a year so I was wondering if there was a way to rent a machine for only a month of two?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm totally obsessed with the magazine "Where Woman Create" I love drooling over the amazing setups and professional studios that some of these woman have. My dream is to someday have a studio/gallery with lots of space, running water (so I can stop getting paint in the guestroom bathroom sink) and room for classes and friends to come create with me. I'm sure most of you have similar workspace dreams. ;)
Though, I am lucky enough to have an extra room to create in, my stuff still spills out into the rest of the house and really that's OK with me. I've gotten used to moving canvases and throwing boxes in closets when company comes. I also didn't really plan my studio, it started out as an office and grew from my day to day needs. Someday I'd like to take everything out and paint and plan where things should go. The only reason that hasn't happened yet is the days I'll lose without my studio together. LOL Anyhow, today I thought I'd share a few photos with you and a few more photos of spots around my home that inspire me. :) I'd love to see your work spaces too! Please let me know if you post pics on your blog or website!

Making Art for Myself

I'm sorry I've been such a bad blogger lately. When I have time I browse through my Google reader account and see so much beautiful inspiration on other blogs and wish that mine could be that way too. I honestly don't know where you all find the time to take and edit such wonderful photos of your day to day. I have been selfishly, guiltily, making art for myself lately. I feel guilty because I know I should be making Design team projects for Alpha Stamps, writing prompts for my Yahoo group or working on my classes. *sigh* I hate that I am so late getting those up but I have trouble being at the computer for more than a few hours a day lately. I get restless easily. I'm not sure what is going on. I love teaching but I don't love the hours it takes in front of the computer to make pdf's, edit photos, and edit video. I think teaching would be so much more fun in person... certainly a lot less editing time. ;)

Anyway, here are a few teaser shots for one of my upcoming classes. I don't have a start date yet but hopefully it will be out soon. I'm introducing a new series called Soul Journaling: Outside The Book. It's a series of classes that take journaling techniques out of your journals and incorporates them into other larger mixed media projects. There will be classes dealing with fabrics, stretched canvas pieces and more. Stay tuned.

Cleaning out my Etsy STore!

I'm cleaning out all of my old work from my Etsy store. It will all be retired and go into storage after this last listing. I think I have grown quite a bit in my art since most of this was made and it's time to lay it to rest. I'm also drastically discounting them so that hopefully it will get a last chance to find a new home. The older pieces I will be discontinuing are:

Well it's freezing outside and I'm sick at home with a cold. :( I've been playing more with video so you can check it out if you like. I desperately need better lighting and a better table setup or something because I'm not loving the video. Yes, I'm a bit of a perfectionist. hehe I can't believe the color difference in the video opposed to the photos (non-color corrected too). Maybe I just need a new camcorder. *shrug* Anyhoo, I hope you enjoy a sneak peek into how I work. :) (oh and btw, the reason there are 5 videos is youtube now only allows 10 minute clips at a time. Lame huh? I need to find something else that I can use that won't break them up like that. )

A Few Newish Paintings

Hi Guys,

Because of the crazy busy last few months I haven't had a chance to post any new artwork. So here's a few moody new paintings I made a few months ago. I really enjoyed working on them and am planning on continuing the series. I've got two more that are sitting in my studio halfway done. I call these my OlD SOUl Series. They may not be everyone's cup of tea but I like them. :)

Video Editing Software?

Hey guys,

I have been researching and playing with video editing software so I can make some tutorials and vlogs for you guys and also possibly offering video classes but I'm having trouble finding a good one.

I need something that:

-Allows me to change the time to speed things up. (for example, if I want to show me doing a painting sped up in ½ time or faster)
-Allows me to cut to a colored screen with text in between video
-Has to be easy to learn, I’m a blonde remember? ;)

Anyone have any suggestions?

Back from our honeymoon!

Hey guys,

We just back back from our honeymoon to Hawaii (Maui, Kauai, Oahu) late last night but I just wanted to pop in and tell you all that we are back and had an amazing time. The wedding in Orlando was beautiful and everything went off without a hitch thanks to our amazing wedding planner. I will have lots of photos to share with you soon and lots of fun little things I made for the wedding to show you too. We don't have all of the photos back yet but here is an awesome engagement slide show the fabulous Roots made for us and here are a few sneak peeks at the wedding photos.

I am kinda sad that the party is over. The planning was such a huge labor of love for me and it was fun to see it all realized. But, I am very very happy to begin this new exciting chapter, to be able to get things at home back to normal, and have more free time to work on my art, my classes and spending more time chatting with all of you. I have deeply missed it.

Lots of love, hugs and thanks to all of you who have sent us your well wishes and love during this wonderful time of our lives.

This time they inspired ME to make a art journal page this afternoon. I used the Soul Journaling writing prompt " I'm afraid that if I start dreaming I will..." with this whimsical poem by Shel Silverstein.

I left a lot of my words showing through my thinly applied paint because I love the writing prompt and wanted to keep much of what I had written.

PS. I used a bit of Rub 'n buff on the edges of these pages. It is even more beautiful in person. If you've never used it before I urge you to RUN to your nearest Micheal's, Joann's, or hardware store and grab some. It's a few dollars per tube and comes in lots of yummy rich colors and creates a great effect when rubbed into your pages. LOVE it!

New Altered Matchboxes

Hey guys,
I am sorry I have been so lax in regards to updating this blog. I have so much going on right now with my wedding coming up and a few health problems that something has have had to give. Unfortunately, that means my blog and website are in serious need of some new art postings. Even though there hasn't been much activity here I assure you there is a lot of new juicy art in my studio right now. I just need to find the time to photograph and upload it all. :) So expect a huge influx of arty goodness after December. In the mean time, here are a few pieces I just finished to wet your appetite!
These are altered matchboxes in two sizes done with acrylic paints and mediums, mica, found objects and more. These were demo pieces for Alpha Stamps so the blank matchboxes, many of the metal embellishments and collage images can be found on their site. Enjoy!

Soul Journaling Prompt: Easy Backgrounds (part 1)!!!

For this prompt I’d like to share a few of my favorite backgrounds. Having multiple finished backgrounds done ahead of time is a great idea when journaling so that when you have the urge to write or draw or make a page, you can do so without worrying about having to prep you pages first. Making a bunch of backgrounds in your journal before you go on a trip can also be helpful for spontaneous art making and journaling. I always have 4 or 5 pages prepped and ready to journal on…more if it’s a long trip. :)

To start, I want to show you my most basic technique for priming a journal page and getting down a fast and easy background. This is the type of background I use all the time and is a great base for jumping off of with all your creative ideas!

Sarah’s must-have, easy-peasy basic background:

To start, glue down random ephemera onto your pages. Don’t use anything precious and do this in a fast haphazard manner. Ephemera can be pages torn out of old phonebooks, textbooks, dictionaries, sheet music, or any other papers you have lying around. This is a great way to use up small scraps of scrapbook paper and junk mail too. If you are using a thicker paged journal such as a watercolor book you don’t need to cover the entire page with ephemera. However, if you are using a thinner paged journal, take the extra time to cover all of your page to help reinforce it. Use any kind of glue you have handy to stick them down and don’t worry about them being perfectly flat. If they dry rippled it will just give you extra cool texture! ;)

When your pages are dry, dry brush a coat of gesso on top. “Dry brush” means to use a light coat and a dry (no water) paint brush to apply your paint. The gesso will give a light tooth to your pages and is a fabulous primer to protect your papers from sloppy paints and messy work later on.

Tip: Pay special attention to the crease of your book, giving it a second coat of gesso for good measure.

While still wet, draw or scratch into the gesso with the wrong end of your paintbrush or any other objects handy. Allow to dry fully. A hair dryer on low can also help speed up the drying process

Now choose 1-3 of your favorite mixable paints. For this, I chose green, blue and brown. They look nice separately and are fabulous when mixed together. If you are new to mixing paints try choosing a favorite color such as red and then using tints of red: made by adding black (or brown) and white to the red. This way you will have a red, pink, and deep red background. You can also experiment with color mixing and see what happens.

Tip: The more colors you mix, the better chance you have of getting a muddy brown color. When choosing colors from the opposite side of the color wheel to mix, such as purple and yellow, you will also get muddy brown. Instead, try colors next to each other on the wheel.

I added a dot of brown, blue, and green to different spots on my pages and then added water. I allowed them to mix and pool in random places.

For extra pizzazz you can add a drop or two of interference paints with water. Here I have added interference blue, and though it is hard to see in the photos, in person it is very sparky and pretty. Allow this to dry fully and you’re all ready to add art to your new background! ;)

In our new Soul Journaling Yahoo group I noticed not a whole lot of art was being posted so I decided to get things rolling by having a drawing to win a piece of my art! The only rules were that you had to post one or more photos in our group albums of original work that you have made based on my prompts. I'm very happy to say that now our group has lots of lovely artwork from our very talented ladies to browse through.

Here's the piece of art I was offering as part of the drawing! The music sheet reads " And thy voice speaks". This piece was from one of the demo painting canvas's I had sent to Somerset Studio Magazine for my Workshop article (on newsstands now). After I got the pieces back I decided to finish them and am very happy with how they turned out.

Soul Journaling Prompt: Tools and Materials Scavenger Hunt!

Your objective: To make a visual journal spread using only the tools and materials on the list below. No basic tools such as glue, paintbrushes, scissors, etc. can be used unless you find a way to make it fit on the list. For instance, “something metal” can be a tool such as a scissors. But do you really NEED a scissors? Or can you tear out your images? Something metal can also be a material such as a really cool embellishment. Here's a few photos of my latest painting. These photos don't do it justice at all. It has lots of layers and texture everywhere that are hard to see unless you are standing in front of it but at least you can get the idea.

This piece was inspired by feelings of losing control, learning to let go and allowing a higher power to take you where you need to go, followed by intense happiness and feelings of relief in doing so.

The paints used in the balloon portion of this painting are Claudine Hellmuth's new Studio line of paints. They worked fantastic. They have a very smooth consistancy and have a nice semi-opaque quality that is very nice for washes. :) I like her multi-medium too. Non-toxic and it even smells good. The only thing is, I wish it came in larger containers! hehe

New "Mini Series" Art

Hey guys,
I have been hard at work, working on a new "Mini Series" of ready to hang, original artwork. So far, there is a star based series called "Reaching for the Stars" and a heart based series called "Reaching for Love". I have just added 7 of them to my etsy store for sale. They are made with stretched canvas (4X4), acrylic paint, wax pastels, fabric, lace remnants and sealed with beeswax. Beeswax (one of my favorite mediums) not only protects the piece but it also adds awesome texture and a wonderful luminosity to the pieces. The photos do not do these pieces justice at all. They are GORGEOUS in person. I think they have a magical quality to them especially when hung in groupings. Enjoy!

F.A.Q.:

How do online classes work?
Once you purchase this class you will be sent an e-mail invitation to our private Yahoo group, where you will find your supplies list, step-by-step class instruction, group messages and more! Each class is broken up into weekly segments (one lesson for each week) that take approximately 3-4 hours each to do. Feel free to print these out and work at your own pace. The new lesson for the week will be added every Friday evening.

You may purchase and enter this class at any time before the class begins. After a class has begun you may still purchase the class but you will have to wait to have access until the next class begins. I prefer Pay pal, but you can also send me a personal check or money order. Please include a current e-mail address with your payment. The Yahoo group will be open for workshop members for three weeks following the last posted lesson. I will be available to answer questions at any time in the future.

How are your techniques and prompts different from the others out there?
I believe that Soul Journaling is for everyone and I try my best to write it for a broad audience. My prompts and easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions are well suited for young, old, artists and non-artists alike. With this instruction you will never have that blank page staring back at you and not know what to do next. You also have the option of following along step by step or just using the ideas as a jumping off point for your own pages. My prompts are also fairly subtle, enabling you to go as deep into yourself as you wish or keep it lighthearted and fun… the choice is yours.

Why do these classes cost money, when the first 22 days of Soul Journaling were free?
Soul Journaling has become a huge part of my life, and helping you (my journalers) on your art journeys is more fulfilling than just about anything else I’ve ever done. My intention is to make it a more permanent part of my life, but I can’t do it alone! So, I’ve really thrown myself into these classes, and shared within them some of my best techniques (things you will be able to use from now on in your art.) In return, your payment will help support Soul Journaling and allow me to continue working with all of you. Thank you for taking part in the newest and most exciting installment of Soul Journaling!

Do I need to be available when the class starts or available during the entire class?

No, each week a new .pdf class file will be available for viewing on our class yahoo site. You can print out these classes to follow at your leisure. If you will be away from a computer during the entire duration of the class just let me know and I can email you the .pdf files so that you can access them at your leisure when the class is over. Each .pdf file is filled with easy-to-follow direction and lots of color photographs. I will also be available anytime, even after the close of class, to answer any questions you may have. If you are concerned about missing class email and chats I would recommend that you take the class at a different time, when you have more access to a computer. Each class will be offered at least twice a year to accommodate different schedules.

How do I sign up?

Since Jared and I just got his and her's iphones. (His is black and mine is white.) I have recently been sucked onto Facebook and Twitter which are really cool on the iphone. I know, I know... just one more thing to keep me from making art. :P The programs are based on Status updates, especially Twitter. It has been really fun to see what Micheal DeMeng is working on and when Claudine Hellmuth is out walking her dog. I've also been able to reconnect with some long lost friends. Hey guys,

I've been busy working on a few Christmas cards for family that were inspired by these cool red string tie envelopes I found and I thought I would share them with you.

Kinda a weird thing to be inspired by right? LOL I just love string tie envelopes. I don't know why but I think there's something really romantic about them. So anyway, of course I had to scoop them up and make some pretty cards to fit inside. These are one sided mini collaged cards done on Watercolor paper. I have written Christmas messages on the back.

Joggles Class

I've been getting a few rather upset emails about the Joggles class date change and I just wanted to tell everyone again how sorry I am. The change was completely out of my hands. Joggles made the decision to push back the class date because they were unable to order the class supplies in time. If for some reason you are not able to attend the "class" don't worry. Every lesson is in pdf format, step-by-step, with lots of pictures for you to print out and work at your leisure. I will also always be available to answer any questions you may have.

Joggles Class Date Changed

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances Joggles has moved my Altered Journal Class from a start date of Nov. 11th to a start date of Nov. 25. In order to allow extra time for those who may wish to make journals for holiday gifts they have decided to post two lessons a week instead of the usual 1 for those who wish to work ahead. This way you will have all 4 lessons at week two to work at your own pace. A detailed email from Joggles announcing this change has been sent to all those already signed up for the class.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing you all in class. So far there's around 35 people signed up and there's still room for more. :)

Class starts Tues, Nov. 11th!!!!

An Altered Journal class with Sarah Whitmire: $45- 4 Weeks/Lessons

Week 1: Prep Work and Collage:
Start by learning how to choose a suitable journal, one that will take paint and not fall apart. Next, learn how to prep the journal to take paint, with techniques that can be used to prime many other surfaces for acrylic painting. Learn the basics of collage, with special tips on visual style and techniques that artists use to create visual interest. Learn techniques and methods for tearing and distressing paper, tips on what types of printed images will perform well and which will bleed, and tips on gluing work correctly and in an archival fashion. Get insider advice on color and composition that will help you in any of your future forays into mixed media art, while creating beautiful collage work on the covers of your new journal.

Week 2: Texture Tools and Stencils: Learn to make fun homemade stencils that allow you greater creativity in your stenciling and can save you lots of time and money shopping at craft stores. Next, add real 3-Dimensional texture to your journal covers using my personal, tried and true, secret technique. Also, learn the basics of vibrant and permanent Staz-On inks and cleaners, a wonderful product you'll find yourself coming back to time and again.

Week 3: Painting:
Learn the basics of color mixing as well as methods and practices for layering fluid acrylics to achieve your desired look. This week is the perfect lesson for newcomers to fluid acrylics and a great review for those with experience. Learn as you work, painting both covers this week. The techniques and theories learned this week can be applied to any mixed media project you plan in the future.

Week 4: Finishing Touches:
Bringing it all together. Use the collage techniques you learned in week 1 to finish the inside covers of your new journal. Learn ways to seal your journal so that it will stand up to wear. Also, learn to embellish your journal, and other future projects, with ribbons, fibers, brass embellishments and gold leafing to create the look you desire for your piece.

This is a fun upbeat class for all levels and NO prior painting experience is necessary! Join us! :)

For your last prompt how about a spread on "Doors"? Think about symbolic doors you have gone through in your life. Doors you have closed. Doors you have yet to open. You may even wish to make them open and close and add journaling and photos behind them.

Soul Journaling: Day 22

Happy Sunday everyone!

I decided to make a second "misfit" character. And here she is:

She's a bit scarier than my cat/mouse character which I kinda like...hehe

Today's Prompt:
Working on the next two page blank spread of your journal:
-First collage various papers such as dictionary pages onto your journal then dry brush with Gesso.
-Then using a permanent pen write for at least 5 minutes using the prompt ” Today I feel…” Sound familiar? ;) (The first time we did this prompt we covered the words with Gesso and not the other way around but today I want our words to symbolically show through. )

-This next part is gonna be messy. If you are worried about your manicure you may want to put on a pair of rubber gloves and it's a good idea to have some paper towels and wet wipes handy too. We are going to finger paint a self-portrait! No paintbrush or tools allowed. This may be a little frustrating but allow yourself to relax and just think about the shapes and colors. Feel the cold paint between your fingers and think about how our ancestors painted their caves, their body, and many other things using only their hands.
- Make sure you fill both pages with color. Add any personal symbols too. Remember only your hands are to paint these pages. ;)

Here's my finished painting. At first I was frustrated but then started to enjoy myself and was pretty impressed I was able to even make a face that resembled me using only my fingers. I think she looks pretty happy too. ;)

I also wanted to mention that the awesome folks at Joggles found out about my Soul Journaling project and were so impressed that they have asked me to teach online classes for them! I pretty much have free reign to teach anything I want so of course I am jumping at this opportunity as it has always been a dream of mine to teach art. I will post more info about these classes in a week or so. :)

Soul Journaling: Day 21

Hi everyone. :)

Here is my Photocopy page from yesterday:

And here is my photocopy book mark all ready to go. I collaged the photocopies onto watercolor paper and inked the edges with ColorBox Chalk. I decided to do both sides of my bookmark (optional) and then wrote my name on a small tag on one of the ribbons. (If you are participating in this swap please make sure to sign your bookmark somewhere.)

Boy my book is getting full! I love it!

It get's harder and harder to close each day now... ;)

Today's Prompt: Misfit Creatures and Sad Super Heros. Have you ever wished you had super powers? Do you ever feel like a misfit? I know I have had many moments like these, especially in the "real" world when I show people my art who just don't "get" it. It's in those moments I feel like a real weirdo with two heads. :P

Here are a few of my past "misfit" paintings: (click for detail)

Today we are going to do a two page spread about a time we felt like a misfit.

Let's work in the next two page blank spread of your journal:

-First make sure your pages are prepped with a dry brush of Gesso if you are not working in a watercolor book.

-Then I want you to draw your misfit character in your journal. Here's how I make mine:

Using a fine tip permanent pen I begin by doodling a random shape. I try not to think about what I am doing and just let my lines be free to cross and go where they may. If i don't like it I can always Gesso over it.

Then I spend some time looking at my lines, kinda like finding shapes in clouds. :)

When I see a character coming through the lines I start to go over them and darken the ones I like.

I'm starting to see a catlike creature with this one. I never know what I am gonna get and the surprise is always so fun. I continue by adding washes of paint to further develop my characters shape and drawing in new features I'd like him to have (like his teeth and feet).

My misfit ended up with a unicorn horn looking thing and instead of painting over that I think I am going to keep it and add lines to it to define it even further.

Keep adding washes of paint, lines and details to your misfit. Think about his or her personality as you do this.

Don't worry about extra lines or drawing a perfect picture. This process should be as enjoyable as finding shapes in clouds.
After you are done with your misfit creature continue developing your spread by journaling about a time you felt like a misfit or super powers you wished you had.

Soul Journaling: Day 20

Yesterday’s homework was to make a color photocopy of at least 3 journal pages at your local office supply store. I am lucky enough to have a great laser copier/printer so I have made a bunch of copies.

I frequently make copies of all kinds of things. Artwork, cool fabrics, patterns, etc. I save them and reuse them in other pieces and I also use them for testing out new ideas. For instance, my "houses page" has a blue sky but maybe I thought about changing it to purple or green but I was afraid to do so and ruin the look I already like. I will then make multiple copies of that page and paint right over the image. Make one purple, one green, and so on to see if I really do want to alter the original. This is a great way to test out all kinds of ideas and not fear ruining the great things you already have happening.

Here is my blue original with my painted green and purple photocopies.

Today's Prompt: Photocopies!

Using photocopies we are going to reuse some of our favorite journal images to make a new page. Working on the next blank two page spread in our journal cut, tear and paste your copies into your journal. This is a great way to take advantage of all those “sweet spots” or “favorite spots” you may have going on in a page. Add additional journaling, paint, or anything else you wish to these pages. Think about all of the possibles for new projects incorporating photocopies of journaled work. Have fun!

Here I am playing with the layout of some of my images, I can't wait to add some new color around these.

Journal Collaged Bookmark swap!

This is totally optional but since we are almost at the end of this Soul journaling journey I though it would be fun to do a bookmark swap with collaged images from your journal. Soul Journaling: Day 19

Thank you all so much for your well wishes. It was such a beautiful time that I was sad to leave NYC but I am so happy to be back home in my studio. :) Since today is Official show and tell day I thought I would start by showing you some of the cool art products I took with me on my travels.

I took two permanent black markers, a small paint brush, a glue stick, watercolor pencils, Peerless watercolors, and a Wet media tablet on the plane. Because of the new regulations I was not allowed to take any water, my glue stick had to be under 3 oz, and my scissors blade under 4 inches. After I got through security I bought a small bottle of water and used the cap to dip my brush in. On our return flight I ordered water for my beverage and drank most of it leaving a little to wet my brush.

These Derwent water color pencils are fabulous. You just draw with them and use a wet brush over your drawings and they magically become watercolor paintings.

If you have never tried Peerless watercolor paper then you are in for a treat. These are super travel friendly and even I was surprised at how vibrant and beautiful these colors were. All you do is touch them with a wet brush to pick up your color.

I bought the regular pack and the small bonus pack to try them out. One side shows the paint's color. The opposite (darker) side has the actual paint on it.

You can see the spot where I touched it with my wet brush.

Not only would these be fabulous tucked inside your travel journals but you could also sew or attach a whole palette into one of your books if you wanted. I ended up only using the very small bonus pack. It is 40 colors strong yet fits in the palm of my hand.

Here is some of my doodle art I made on the plane using my fine tip sharpie marker and my watercolors.

I bought this cool kids book at one of the gift shops and it entertained me on my return flight.

These spirals would be soo neat as a background for an ATC or decoration on an envelope. I plan on using some of my watercolor paints over them too.

And finally I promised you all my potpourri journal prompt pictures. Here is my second piece:

Here is my third “Collage potpourri” piece. I am already seeing great things happening that I’d like to go back into and develop further. And I like how the corrugated cardboard made some great lines so I can add further journaling later.

Homework: Color photocopy at least 3 of your favorite journal pages. Copies are usually only a few cents and most office supply places are very helpful if you have never made a copy before.

I Said "Yes"!!

Jared asked me to marry him in New York on the morning of our 10 year Anniversary! I of course said "yes"!

The ring is super sparkly and brilliant in person the pictures do not do it justice at all.

Here is a picture of the spot he asked me. Near beautiful Bow bridge in Central park.

He got down on one knee and asked me. At first I was crying so hard I couldn't see the ring... all I could see was a sea of wet sparkles. :) But the ring has little cut outs on the sides which remind me of the bridge. I LOVE it!

The Lion King on Broadway was AWESOME!!!

We stayed at the Gorgeous New York Palace Hotel.

We ate at The Boathouse, One if by Land Two if by Sea, Gilt, and Balthazar. We got room service...twice. We went to Kate's Paperie, Metalliferous, the Museum of Modern Art stores , and the Guggenheim. We walked downtown, bought cool stuff from street vendors and took a snazzy Limo to the airport.
We did so much and it was such a whirlwind amazing trip! The whole thing felt like a dream and was better and more amazing then anything I could have ever imagined. Jared surprised me when we got home by having this delivered to the house. *swoon*

Soul journaling: Day 18

Some of you already know that Jared and my 10 year (non-wedding) anniversary is coming up Aug. 3rd. To celebrate Jared is whisking me off to NYC to soak up all the art and fun we can! I am over the moon excited but I do hate to leave you all. Today will be the last prompt I give you until I return on Aug. 7. I hope that you all continue working in your journals and we can have a "show and tell" when I return as I am also planning on taking my journal with me. :)

Mix up this list!

-Write the Alphabet quick and Angry (use a permanent ink pen)
-Cut out a silhouette of a person’s face, ink or paint over (magazine stencil technique)
-Add a wash of paint in a new color
-Use something unusual as a stamp (like a piece of corrugated cardboard or a sliced green pepper)
-List everything you did today so far. (Include little things like: brushed my teeth and let the dog out)
-Gesso out a section of your work, don’t think about it…just do it. Add something new over it.
-Add something metal
-Add a drybrush of paint in a new color

Continue playing with these pages. Be messy and have fun. The cool thing about this is you could do this same basic list over and over again and get totally different results each time.

I would suggest not covering these pages up but instead using them as a reference of your experiences. Though, if something comes up that needs to be covered please feel free to do so. :)

Soul journaling: Day 17

Hi there! Sorry I am posting so late today. I had a crazy morning. :P

Today's prompt is going to be similar to yesterday's:

More Collage potpourri!

Do all of the following things to your pages BUT: Mix up the order. You can go in any order you like EXCEPT the order they're already in. If you want: print this list out, cut out the tasks, fold them and shake them into a bowl and randomly pick what to do next!

Page 3 and 4

Mix up this list!

-Fill up the page with numbers (Draw, collage, or stamp)
-Blob acrylic paint in your book and close it (did you know that Frida Kahlo used to do this in her journals?)
-Trace the outline of your hand at least 6 times (Use a permanent ink pen or paint*)
-Add a wash of a new color paint
-Use a crayon somewhere
-Paint with a fork dipped in paint
-Stitch with a needle and thread OR attach something with thread
-Add some meaningful words

*I also used a “Wite-out correction pen” by Bic

Tip: Keep baby wipes or wet paper towels handy to move paint around or remove unwanted paint spots

I thought I would mix things up today and only give you a sneek peek of mine so i don't influenece your process too much. ;)

My pages from today and yesterday are already speaking to me. This is my favorite form of visual journaling. Because the steps are random it forces you to turn some of the focus off the critical voice that double thinks everything and the choices you make are what makes art… art. Color, Composition, etc.

I have gotten a few emails about this so I thought I would post a note about it here too.

A note about permanency: When you are doing layers of journaling like we are today you need all of your inks and pens, markers, etc. to be labeled “permanent” if you don’t want them to bleed. My favorite permanent pens are Sharpie markers, Faber-Castell Pitt artist pens (India ink), or Acrylic Inks with a fountain pen (such as Liquitex). My favorite Permanent stamping ink is Staz-On. I always buy refill bottles when I buy these as they dry out fast. You will also need Staz-On cleaner to remove the ink from your stamps.

Soul Journaling: Day 16

Today we are going to have lots of fun!

The first thing I did was take my paper dolls out and put them in a safe spot because they were making my book a bit bumpy to work on. Then I put waxed paper between my pages. Oh I forgot to mention that when I know things are going to get VERY messy I put a paper towel on top of my waxed paper to help soak up any extra paint. This is part of my set up process and I do it without even thinking.

Before we begin in our books today I want to demo a technique for you. I call it the Magazine Stencil technique. It's easy and looks great in journals. First, find an interesting body shape in a magazine. Pay attention to the negative space (space around the person) and the outline. This is what will show up when stenciled. The larger and less complex your shapes are the easier they are to stencil. Remember, don't do this in your journal yet...I'm just showing you how.

Hold your image still with one hand and use a make-up or other type of sponge to brush the paint over it.

Peel up your image. TaDa! Cool huh?

Now let's try it in the journal. We are gonna start working on the pre-prepped pages from yesterday. We will do one spread a day for 3 days.
